The Challenge: Developing an Ultralow-Power Device with a Programmable Data Logger

SIAP+MICROS recognized the need for a measuring device that can transmit data to remote control panels. The company sought to create an affordable system that combines data acquisition and communication via cellular in one device. It had to be a high-performing product with many acquisition interfaces. The device also had to guarantee low absorption for hydrometric monitoring, surface water, groundwater and tanks.  

The Telit Cinterion Solution: Enabling Reliable Cellular IoT Connectivity in Hard-to-Reach Locations 

“Through Telit Cinterion’s support, we designed the nanoSUM. It’s an ultralow-power device with a programmable data logger equipped with an integrated 4G modem with 2G fallback.  

The ultralow power absorption allows a small battery to power the device with an autonomy of up to four years. Its compact dimensions enable it to be housed in small spaces, such as maintenance holes, well mouths and electrical panels.”

The Results: A Data Logger Built around an Intelligent 4G LPWA Modem

With our IoT enablement, nanoSUM achieves everything SIAP+MICROS set out to develop. Sensors with pulse output (e.g., rain gauge) and those with RS232, RS485, RS422 and SDI-12 serial outputs can connect easily. Devices can be managed externally with one of the integrated digital outputs. 

Various functions can be programmed on the device, including:  

  • The frequency of data acquisition  
  • The types of data elaboration to be performed, such as average, trigonometric average, minimum, maximum, etc. 
  • The frequency of data memorization
  • The frequency of sending them with different protocols (e.g., FTP)  
  • The behavior for ultralow power consumption

The system was designed with the utmost attention to consumption. It can be used with battery power for installations without an external power supply. Furthermore, it can be supplied with enclosures for IP protection (submersible), with or without an integrated system battery power supply. The device can power the sensors and manage the duty cycle (On/Off) at 5 or 12 V dc. 

The entire software program managing nanoSUM is written on our IoT AppZone environment and embedded in a cellular module. Moreover, IoT AppZone provides a sophisticated and flexible system of independent watchdog timers. These protect the entire solution from most possible software faults, assuring a reset strategy to reboot the system. 

nanoSUM can also be equipped with an integrated GPS receiver to georeference the data or synchronize the internal clock. The system has been designed to have low power consumption and be used on systems without an external power supply.
